Hulu has been around since 2008 and is the primary streaming service for some of the most significant U.S. broadcast services. Their library of Hulu originals include The Handmaid’s Tale, Marvel’s Runaways, The Path and Future Man. In 2017 Hulu added live news, sports and entertainment to their service offerings.
IFC Films, Sundance Selects, and IFC Midnight, have been behind the production and release of significant film wins, including The Death of Stalin, Love After Love and the 2016 Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winner – I, Daniel Blake.
The Details Of The Deal
These two powerhouses have announced an expanded output agreement. The new agreement will see Hulu receive the exclusive streaming rights to all current and future non-documentary films produced by IFC Films and its partners. This will make Hulu the single largest provider of IFC films among all of the streaming services in the U.S.
In an interview, Hulu’s VP of Acquisition, Lisa Holme stated, “IFC Films consistently delivers award-winning, popular films, and they have been one of our longest-standing film partners. We look forward to expanding our relationship in a way that will bring even more highly-sought-after and new titles to our viewers.”
The multi-year agreement includes 2018 and will see films being released as early as this summer on Hulu. Lisa Schwartz, Co-President of IFC Films, further promoted the relationship between the two companies, when she said, “IFC Films has had a terrific partnership with Hulu, and expanding our relationship enables us to further continue our commitment to supporting independent filmmakers to ensure their work is seen by the largest possible audience,”.
Some of the new films being released on Hulu include Andie MacDowell’s return to features, Love after Love as well as Ghost Stories (starring Martin Freeman). The latter was a massive hit at the London Film Festival. From IFC Midnight, horror icons Robert Englund and Lin Shaye appear in The Midnight Man. IFC Midnight has produced some genuinely classic horror and suspense thrillers including The Autopsy of Jane Doe and Babadook.
